BSA's One Year Actor Training (part time) course is comprised of two compulsory study areas: Screen-Acting and Acting for Stage (with units including Meisner Technique, Classical Acting, and Contemporary Text). In an increasingly competitive market, it is important for Actors to be versatile in both performance mediums.
The Course consists of three 10-Week Semesters, culminating in a SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE AT THE SOHO THEATRE in London (to which Industry Professionals will be invited) and a GRADUATION SHORT FILM (HDV) filmed on location by Guest Film Directors, with broadcast quality camera, lighting and sound equipment. The Course Fee also includes CV Preparation and Design, a Career Advice session, and a DVD copy of selected scenes filmed in the Screen-Acting Unit.
Career Guidance is an important ongoing feature of the Learning Programme. Students are advised on all aspects of entering the profession – or revamping their current careers – via guidance on how to approach Agents, promoting themselves as Actors, sourcing Acting work, getting the right Headshot, and designing a CV that sells.
At BSA, students are expected and encouraged to deliver the high standard of discipline and commitment which will be required of them as professional actors. Throughout the Course, students are exposed to working with Industry Professionals including Casting Directors, Television Directors and Filmmakers.
As part of the ongoing professional development of each student, BSA schedules visits throughout the year to West End and Fringe Theatre, Film Screenings, and Industry Talks to which students are invited. Each year, this includes a visit to either Shakespeare’s Globe or RSC Stratford, in support of work being studied in the Classical Acting unit, and during the Contemporary Text unit a visit to The Royal Court or other venues showcasing new writing. Previous visits have included Othello at The Globe, Henry V at The Courtyard in Stratford (followed by a Q&A with cast members and backstage tour exclusive to BSA students), and works by Mark Ravenhill and Anthony Nielsen at The Royal Court.
Voice & Movement Studies are also integrated into the learning programme on the One-Year Actor Training Course. These include Relaxation and Meditation, Diction, Projection, and Vocal Clarity.
BSA is a fully vocational School and students work to an intensive Course Programme consisting of six hours of practical study one day per week. Each semester concludes with internal assessments and individual tutorials to monitor each student’s progress, and whilst BSA does not currently offer a formal qualification, students will be awarded the School’s own Course Certificate upon successful graduation.
Classes are held once a week during term-time, on Sundays. There are two intakes each year, in February and October.
